Meet the team.

The people behind CBJ: our story, our coaches, and why we do what we do.

Our Story

How CBJ started.

CBJ began with Joanna Hodge. She started in the fitness industry in 2014, studying while she worked across commercial gyms as a Personal Trainer, Gym Instructor, and Group Fitness Instructor. She learned the trade from every angle, and saw first-hand where the typical gym experience let people down.

In 2017 she stepped into a Health Club Manager role, running gym operations and leading a team of up to eight personal trainers. Alongside the work she kept studying, continuing her education through ASCA and Pre-Script, and built a deep focus on strength training, movement quality, and developing clients for the long term rather than the quick fix.

In 2021, Jo launched CBJ Coaching as an online coaching business. It was a different way of working, built on real coaching rather than generic programs handed out and forgotten. The results spoke for themselves, and a community grew around it.

In 2024, that community got a home: the CBJ Lifting Club, a private coaching gym. It's a coaching-only facility with an old-school feel: chalk, real iron, and weights heavy enough for the most experienced lifters. But it's just as much a place for someone stepping into a gym for the very first time. Safe, welcoming, and free of the noise and intimidation of a commercial floor, it's built so that whether you're chasing a big PB or just starting out, you belong here.

What started as one coach and an idea has grown into a full team, and the same belief still runs through everything: everyone who trains with us, online or in person, gets a coach who knows their name, their goals, and what's been getting in their way.

Founder & Head Coach

Jo

Jo is the coach behind everything CBJ does. She specialises in strength training, nutrition, and the mindset side of lasting change, and works with clients both online and in the gym.

What sets Jo apart is where she starts. Before she writes a single program, she wants to understand you: your history with training, what's worked and what hasn't, what's actually driving you to make a change, and what your life genuinely looks like day to day. The program comes after, because a plan that ignores your real life isn't coaching.

Her style is direct but supportive. She listens before she advises, she meets you where you are, and she won't let you stay there. Expect honesty, high standards, and someone who's genuinely invested in your progress.

Jo believes most people who struggle to stay consistent aren't lazy or undisciplined. They've just never had a coach properly in their corner. Her job is to be exactly that.

Nicole, Physiotherapist
Physiotherapist

Nicole

Nicole holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and a Masters in Physiotherapy Practice from La Trobe University, Bendigo.

Nicole brings a depth of clinical experience that's rare in a gym setting. After graduating, she worked in outpatient physiotherapy specialising in neurological conditions, before developing a focused expertise in dizziness and balance, an area she remains passionate about.

For the past several years Nicole has worked primarily in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, diagnosing, assessing and treating injuries, and guiding clients back to sport or everyday function. She's also served as a field physiotherapist for sporting clubs, giving her hands-on experience in acute injury management when it matters most.

Nicole has a keen interest in strength development for women and is excited to bring her clinical background into a strength and conditioning environment where the focus is on performance and long-term optimisation.
